Sleepless: Chapter Eleven
Fractured Vision, Broken Bones [And That which Falls Between the Cracks]
The sand felt different beneath Margo’s feet.
Trodden was a word that came to mind, a greenish-brown beast of a thing. A cryptic sort of reminder that they were not the first on this beach, nor would they be the last.
Fog clung to her arms. Her arms, this time. The wind that whistled through the trees swept past her, sending shivers along her spine.
They’d had to jump in the water, same as they’d done before, but there was no fire this time to sit by and warm up. She’d held onto Felix’s shoulders the same as she’d done before, but all four of them were soaked regardless. A trail of wet sand followed them up the beach.
Hourglass sand. That’s what it felt like. Like it was all filtering away into the ocean grain by grain and one day it’d all be gone. Trodden, but impermanent. Malleable. She wondered how extensive that erosion process could be. Would this whole island be gone someday? Swept away one dirt clod and pine needle at a time?
She still didn’t know why there were pine trees on this alien planet.
But maybe now wasn’t the time for that.
