The cameras in the inn reveal a deathly silence permeating the space between Solena and Jovis, still just where the last log left them.
Solena’s hands have paused in packing, hesitating on what she wishes to say, but before the moment can stretch too long, Jovis deflects. “So… big mission ahead.”
“Pretty damn big, yeah.”
“You feeling ready for it?”
“Well, I know now that I can ride without a saddle. So I guess if a zombie ever takes it from me, I’m still gonna be fine?”
Jovis laughs. “Yeah, so long as there’s no jumps. Oreo was running a space program that whole test.”
Solena groans, rolling her eyes. “Yeah, yeah. Don’t remind me.”
“Not sure I need to. I’m willing to bet your tailbone is doing a fine enough job of that all by itself.”
They both chuckle over this as Solena packs the last few items, zipping up the bag.
“Seriously though,” Jovis asked, getting level with her. “Do you think you’re ready? I mean, you’ll be running with the big dogs this time, not me and a handful of teenagers. I’m talking trained professionals. People… a lot closer to Wendy or Sloan than you or me, y’know?”
Just as Solena opens her mouth to ask, the footage flips away with a CLICK
, a new scene coming into and out of focus as someone fusses with the camera. They finally get it right, the view clarifying on the poorly lit interior of a building.
The walls are made of scrap metal, with a few windows in place covered by metal shutters. One across the room is slightly open, catching an orange glow of a dusk-tinted sky.
