The footage begins with a minute and a half of… nothing.
Seconds tick by in darkness. Silence.
Then, finally, a soft chk. A voice. An unintelligible murmur, practically underwater by the sound.
Without warning, the footage explodes into light, into life, yanked back into an alleyway somewhere in Pavonis, flickering lights dancing across the ivy-laced brick walls as Masur’s open palm slaps Wendy across the cheek and then grabs her by the front of her collar.
“I need you here with me, Wendy. You are a soldier,” she snarls. “Act like it.”
Wendy blinked at her once then twice before her head truly began to clear, assessing the situation as though it was the first time she’d seen it. They were in a courtyard behind a building of no known importance, two alleyway entrances to either side with lights streaming down them. A curtain of leaves partially obscured their position, but it was a flimsy cover in such dire circumstances.
Someone was playing music nearby, but it was muffled by distance or rock or both — all she could feel was the rumbling bass, the beating heart beneath her feet.
Down one alleyway, Jovis and Lykus stood guard. Though Lykus was keeping an eye outward, Jovis could only lock eyes with her. It was contact that she didn’t reciprocate for long.
Alison was still on the ground with Sebastian hovering over her, working carefully but quickly to determine what had happened. His eyes flicked up, calling out to Masur.
“What happened? What did you see?”
