The camera flickers, bringing into focus the inside of a building, then a long empty street, and finally lingers on the visual of the remnants of Alison and Sebastian’s camp at the ARNEN base, their supplies littered across the ground leading up to a now open door.
Sebastian knew the moment the Ebonhand operative set foot in the city.
His ability to track her was better than expected — the Ebonhand suits made them invisible to biocoded trackers and survey equipment, but only properly obscured their data if they were fully on.
With her suit tied around her waist, she was an easy target to follow with a biometric scanner, even for as dinged up and ramshackle as his was. It was a handheld device only thanks to a serious jury-rigging effort. They’d been able to find a dormant scanner in a building by the outer edge of the city wall, and managed to scavenge its guts, hook it up to a battery, and make it portable.
Pretty, it was not. Functional, though, it certainly was.
They’d cranked up the radius as high as it could go, and ever since they’d gotten it running, he and Alison were the only two signatures that ever showed on it.
That had changed recently.
And changed once again with the arrival of the Hand operative.
For the life of him, he wasn’t quite sure where she’d managed to get in from. They had tripwires at all the major entrances they’d found, and she hadn’t triggered any of them.
Then again, if she’d managed to spot and evade their rather basic security system, he wasn’t sure he should be that surprised.
