The scene was a gruesome one as Maven was hauled away. She fought with every fiber of her being against the Ebonhand’s hold on her, but in return for her efforts, she was beaten and cracked over the head with a baton until all they were dragging off was a bloody, unconscious body.
The camera catches it all in gruesome detail.
With her gone, Jovis’s attention finally turned back to Solena, beckoning her to follow as they walked the final stretch to the dragon barn, Solena’s bag still gripped tightly in Jovis’s hand. A few of the others followed, some taking up guarding positions and others milling about in the barn, checking on dragons or their own bags to see if anything was missing.
Jovis sat her down just outside Oreo’s stall, handing the bag off to another member of the Hand to catalog its contents and store it for evidence.
Solena couldn’t show the clenching of her fists or teeth, couldn’t risk any emotion flicking across her eyes as she tried desperately to form a plan and came up empty-handed. She couldn’t take everyone here, and Jovis refused to leave her side, checking over her various injuries.
And time pressed on without her.
Within the next half an hour as Jovis insisted she sit and recover, the already obscured afternoon sunlight found an early, unnatural darkness as the sandstorm swallowed Piket Rock.
The lights flicked on in the barn, and it took every ounce of willpower Solena had to hold herself together. This wasn’t the end, she reminded herself. Just a switch back to Plan A.
Her window had shut.
All there was to do now was damage control.
